The Case of the Disappearing Summer Sale
Something strange has been happening at Bamboo Zoo.
At first, I thought it was the summer heat.
Then I thought perhaps the pandas had simply become more adventurous.
But after careful observation from my usual position near the shelf, I discovered the truth.
The pandas were disappearing.
Not all at once, of course. That would have been far too dramatic.
One panda vanished after lunch.
Another disappeared shortly before closing.
A third was last seen being held by a customer who said, very confidently, “I’m just looking.”
This is a suspicious phrase.
In my experience, people who say “I’m just looking” are often already imagining where the panda will live.
On a desk.
Beside a bed.
Inside a suitcase.
Or wrapped carefully for someone who has no idea that a small panda is about to enter their life.

The shelves looked different by the afternoon.
Not empty.
Just changed.
A little more space here.
A different panda moved forward there.
A small gap where someone had clearly found the one.
I examined the scene closely.
No paw prints.
No dropped bamboo.
No signs of escape.
Only shopping bags, quiet smiles, and the unmistakable evidence of a Summer Sale still in progress.
This, I realised, was not a disappearance.
It was a migration.
A late-July panda migration.
From Bamboo Zoo shelves to homes, gift bags, bookshelves and cosy corners across London and beyond.

The Summer Sale will not last forever.
Cases rarely do.
By the end of July, the signs will come down, the shelves will change again, and I will begin a new investigation.
But for now, I am keeping watch.
If there is a panda you have been thinking about, this may be the moment to visit.
Some pandas wait patiently.
Others disappear quietly into someone else’s story.
